Matt black bespoke units with tinted glass reinforce slick entrance for Sports Direct

The architects responsible for the Sports Direct head office in Oxford Street, London had a very specific aesthetic in mind, so when security integrator Autogate Systems Ltd were looking for a turnstile to provide both effective security and the desired finish, they turned to Fastlane Turnstiles.

Claire Preen, New Business Manager at Autogate has a long standing relationship with IDL, “Fastlane are the Rolls Royce of entrance control so I knew they would be the perfect solution for this job, which needed customisation to match the paired back, minimalist look that the architects briefed us on as well as the speed of processing to ensure that authorised users could get to their destination quickly and smoothly.”

The turnstile used is a Glassgate 150 with customisation to colour and housing. The turnstiles feature custom ends, with tight square edges rather than the 80mm radius curved ends on the standard product. This alteration gave the ‘sharp’ look that the architects were after. The skirting at the bottom of the pedestals is to the floor so that cabling can be easily housed anywhere in the pedestal.

The customised units for Sports Direct also feature grey tinted dual swing barriers and grey tinted centre glass panels, both using toughened glass for strength and safety. The stainless steel pedestals have a matt black powder coat finish. Powder coating creates a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint, which is why it is frequently found on products such as bike frames and household appliances, and this will help to preserve the look of the units.

John Austin, IDL’s Regional Sales Manager for London, commented, “Despite the high spec finish of the final product, this was all a day’s work for us as we are very comfortable with creating bespoke units that support an architect’s vision for the whole project. It’s very important that nothing looks out of place so we can deliver a great result for the end client. We’ve been working with Claire and Autogate for a long time so we know that we’ll all pull together for a great project.”

Claire continued, “We chose Fastlane speedgates for this project because we know they’re a quality product manufactured on site at IDL’s UK facility, meaning that any spares needed can be on hand in a couple of days not weeks, and their bespoke capability surpasses all others. The technical support is second to none, they are always happy to seek out solutions that satisfy client’s needs. Finally, their open protocol means that clients aren’t locked into a maintenance agreement and can choose the best provider.”

As is often the way, the install had to take place on a short timescale, and with all the other trades on site as well. There was not a lot of elbow room but everyone knew their role and, consequently, the turnstiles were quickly installed and commissioned and the architect could see how well they fitted with the overall design.
