Fastlane Intelligates secure Scotland’s best building

Earlier this month, Nucleus – the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s national archive for the civil nuclear industry in Wick, Caithness – won the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award 2018, selected from a shortlist of 12 designs. Fastlane turnstiles secure some of the world’s most iconic buildings, protecting the people and asset within from unauthorised intruders, and now we are pleased to add Nucleus to that list.

Designed by Reiach & Hall Architects, Nucleus was built at a former RAF site to hold information and up to 30 million digital records, including local archives dating back to the 16th Century, documents and photographs relating to Dounreay – an experimental nuclear power complex located 30 miles from Wick, now being decommissioned – and other nuclear sites located at Harwell in Oxfordshire, Trawsfynydd in Snowdonia and Sellafield in Cumbria.

Working with Security Solutions, one of our trusted integrators, Fastlane Intelligates have been installed at Nucleus to manage and control access to the restricted access areas at this facility, separating public spaces from those only accessible to staff.

Adrian Nottingham, National Sales Manager at Security Solutions, comments: “The sleek design of Nucleus has been described as ‘an impressive industrial building’ and ‘beautifully sculpted’ and the architects approached us looking for entrance barriers to reflect this. They wanted a solution which would provide a level of security similar to a turnstile, including tailgate detection capability, but appeared quite minimal to be in keeping with the building’s aesthetic. Having presented a range of Fastlane products, the architects chose the Intelligate as it complements the environment and is the only post-style passgate on the market with tailgate detection.”

The Intelligate is a bi-directional, dual swing glass motorised entrance gate with optical monitoring. It has been designed to provide an extra wide lane to a turnstile installation and is suitable for all users, including people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users, as well as for facilitating the movement of goods deliveries.

Capable of integrating seamlessly with your access control system, the Intelligate knows how many people to admit and in which direction of travel, with any unexpected movements instantly met with an audible and visual alarm, and signals passed to your access control system to acknowledge an alarm event has occurred. Thanks to its high processing speed, pedestrian traffic doesn’t build up and, with its door-like motion, the Intelligate is quickly accepted by users.

Phil Allen, Regional Sales Manager UK & Ireland at Integrated Design Limited, comments: “Having worked closely with architects over the past 30 years, our team understands the positive impact of great design. This is why, as well as our products providing the required level of security, we place the utmost importance on aesthetics, ensuring that we have a range of products to complement any  environment.”
