The University of Birmingham’s Main Library
Working with Telepen, one of our key partners and widely regarded as the specialist installer of library access control systems, Fastlane turnstiles have been installed to secure the University of Birmingham’s new state-of-the-art main library.
The new £44 million library has recently been unveiled following a two-and-a-half-year construction programme, providing facilities for students, staff and researchers alongside a cultural hub for the university and the city. Part of the development involved the installation of seven customised Fastlane Glasswing lanes to ensure that only authorised library users are granted access, and also enable the capture of other useful data to help with administration in terms of staff planning and management of flow of library users during peak times.
Starting with the standard Fastlane Glasswing turnstile – recommended by Telepen for its appearance as much as its speed of processing – our technical team created a bespoke top to allow for integration of a card reader and the purpose-built Telepen control panel. The readers and control panels in each of the seven lanes connect to Telepen’s software, Sentry Juno, the only access control software specifically designed for academic libraries. Three of the seven lanes installed are bi-directional, to allow the University to change the direction of the lanes during peak times to better manage the flow of people entering or leaving the building.
“The University of Birmingham has been a long standing customer of ours, so when it came to selecting a turnstile provider, we needed to be confident in the quality of build and reliability of the product,” comments Paul Burchett, Managing Director of Telepen. “We chose Integrated Design Limited as our preferred partner as we can trust them to deliver what they promise – beautiful, exceptional quality products alongside excellent technical support and service. Working together as a team, we delivered a very successful project, resulting in a happy end user and an attractive and functional entrance control solution to complement the new University of Birmingham’s library design perfectly. We look forward to working with IDL on future projects.”
Phil Allen, Regional Sales Manager UK & Eire at Integrated Design Limited, added: “Working closely with Telepen, our expert technical team designed a bespoke alteration to the Fastlane Glasswing unit, allowing integration with Telepen’s software and card reader technology. Requests for bespoke alterations like these are simple for us to action because all of our products are manufactured in Britain from scratch to fulfil specific orders, rather than retro-fitted.”
