Delivering security excellence: Meet James Cox, London Sales Manager for Fastlane Turnstiles

We’re delighted to announce that James Cox has joined the IDL team as Sales Manager for the Greater London area. James will work with clients based in the capital, ensuring our customers benefit from effective and safe authorised access to controlled spaces without compromising their design requirements.

James’s expertise and dedication to the security industry make him a valuable addition to the IDL team. With his proven track record and client-centric approach, he is set to drive significant growth and innovation in his new role.

We spoke to James about his career to date, discussing his breadth of experience in the security industry and how this has shaped his comprehensive and detailed approach. This helps ensure he finds the best entrance and integrated security solution to meet each client’s unique needs.

What experiences have shaped your career?

I’m proud to have had a varied career across the industry. Working in many different areas has shaped my understanding of the security sector in particular. It means I can support clients across a wide range of vertical markets, managing the competing challenges they may face. From beginning as an apprentice and training in electronic / electrical engineering to designing fire detection systems in the marine division of Thorn EMI and then transitioning into the security industry, I believe this experience in a variety of areas has played a big part in refining my skills and deepening my knowledge.

In security, I have particular experience in perimeter protection, integrated access control, CCTV, intruder, and fire systems. This means I’m able to approach clients’ projects with a comprehensive understanding and always look to collaborate with other experts to ensure each aspect of security, safety, and building management is streamlined.

For the last thirteen years, I have been the Security Sales Manager for London at Boon Edam Ltd. I managed a diverse portfolio of large accounts, looking after end users, security contractors, working on major fit-outs, and liaising closely with main contractors.

As an established member of the security industry, what have you seen change, and what remains constant?

Working in security often means we don’t name our clients – I’ve always had a deep respect for this need for discretion because the safety and protection of each client’s business is our top priority. But I’m proud to have worked on some high-profile projects – buildings and companies that define the London business community and the skyline, as well as major regeneration projects which have brought historic and iconic London buildings a new lease of life. It is always a pleasure to walk through London and be able to see the projects I’ve been involved with.

Relationships have always been vital and will continue to define the industry. While security has become a board-level focus for companies, the implementation is delivered by many parties working together. Whether it is architects and designers, contractors, installers or security integration partners, my role is to support their relationship with the end user or building owner and help provide solutions. My deep understanding of the security sub-contractors’ needs is invaluable in helping deliver successful projects.

This responsive and collaborative relationship-focused approach also influences the speed at which the industry is changing. Innovation has always driven the industry forward; in the last few years, this has meant a rapid increase in integration.

Starting with advanced entrance control and bringing in other smart devices like Door Detective, we can now use technology to create layered access across a building and connect this data to drive smart building management from lifts to HVAC and lighting. IDL offers a comprehensive range of solutions that secure your building now but are also future-proofed and built with sustainability at their core. I’m excited to work with the team at IDL and have a deep respect for the company’s proactive approach to innovation and finding bespoke solutions.

What attracted you to IDL and this role?

I was drawn to IDL because it’s a respected UK manufacturer known for its high-quality products. Continuous learning and innovation are key to staying ahead in this dynamic industry. I aim to leverage my extensive industry knowledge to help IDL build on its fantastic reputation for service and products.

My approach has always been to ‘just get the job done,’ ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in all my endeavours. I believe in providing timely responses and robust support to clients, whether they need product information or support with technical issues. Ensuring client satisfaction is always my top priority.

The London-based role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the company’s growth. I’m excited to draw on my industry knowledge and experience and be part of a collaborative team.

I’m thrilled about the new challenges this role offers. There is significant potential for growth in London, and I’m eager to be a part of this exciting journey.
