Creating a secure environment at summer sporting events with IDL entrance control
Summer 2024 will see another action-packed season of exciting sporting events, with large crowds drawn to stadiums and arenas from across the world. But, with this influx of spectators comes heightened security risks. Preventing unauthorised access and ensuring the safety of attendees, athletes, performers, and staff – while ensuring a positive entry experience – is a complex challenge that requires advanced technology and comprehensive planning.
With our state-of-the-art Fastlane entrance control turnstiles, IDL is at the forefront of providing robust security measures tailored to the needs of sporting stadiums and major event venues.
Understanding the security challenges
The implementation of stringent security measures at stadiums is essential to protect profits and safeguard all individuals inside. These measures must be effective in preventing unauthorised entry and ensuring only ticketed attendees and authorised personnel can access restricted areas. The flow of potentially tens of thousands of spectators needs to be managed appropriately, while ensuring efficiency, ease-of-use, and a seamless customer entry-and-exit experience. The customer experience element is crucial; a frustrating experience will reflect poorly on the venue, sporting team and associated brands. If someone must queue for a long time to enter a venue, they may decide not to attend again.
In crowded environments, where you need to process a large volume of people at speed but still provide a high level of assurance that security measures have been taken to prevent a major incident, you need to achieve detailed security screening without inconveniencing users.
What is needed to succeed?
IDL’s products and services are designed to meet the rigorous demands of securing large venues. Behind the exterior of our Fastlane range, the infrared matrix that drives the decision to authorise entry makes thousands of calculations per second based on luggage being carried or pulled, tailgating, unauthorised passages and much more.
This intelligent technology in our Speedgates range, for example, is capable of processing up to 60 people per minute, one at a time. When integrated with biometric software, there is little or no dwell time when screening someone’s ticket and biometrics simultaneously and deciding whether to allow entry.

Case study: London Stadium – securing an iconic British venue
IDL, along with one of our trusted integrators, Security Solutions, was charged with designing, manufacturing, and installing entrance control security at London Stadium, a venue with the capacity to seat up to 60,000 visitors when in football mode.
Security Solutions oversaw the stadium’s security transformation, which features a combination of full-height turnstiles and half-height entrance gates, totalling 108 separate access controls. Ten lanes of half-height Fastlane Glasswing turnstiles and 2 lanes of Disability and Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant Fastlane Intelligates were installed at the two VIP entrance areas to the stadium.
Installing Fastlane’s entrance control turnstiles allows for a fast throughput of authorised users, while preventing any unauthorised users from gaining access.

Achieving security and speed
As we gear up for another exciting summer of sporting events in 2024, the importance of stringent security measures cannot be overstated.
In a climate where security threats are a constant concern – the UK’s terror threat level remains at ‘substantial’, as just one area of threat – entrance security must be a significant consideration for event organisers.
IDL is leading the charge with its innovative Fastlane turnstiles, proving that a high assurance of security and high throughput of authorised people can be achieved simultaneously.
