The YMCA in Greater Toronto chooses Fastlane Glassgate 150s

One of the largest and most active charitable organisations in the Greater Toronto area, The YMCA, has chosen Fastlane turnstiles to improve child safety and security.

Offering a variety of community services – including education and training, employment and immigrant services, family and youth services, health and fitness programs, child care and camps – the YMCA’s vision is “that our communities will be home to the healthiest children, teens and young adults.” This vision drives all aspects of their operations, including their safety and security measures.

Most locations were using subway-style tripod turnstiles for entrance control, with members swiping barcoded plastic cards to gain entry. These units, which had reached the end of their useful life, did not permit high volume user throughput to support large events or busy periods at the facility. They also did not support wheelchair or buggy access.

Working with Smarter Security, our exclusive Fastlane distributor in North America, and following an extensive site evaluation, the decision was made to modernise the existing entrance control system in order to improve the safety and security at the YMCA’s Greater Toronto site. Integrated Design Limited supplied lanes of Fastlane Glassgate 150s.

The Glassgate 150 offers the best possible price/performance ratio of any turnstiles on the market, as measured against safety, security and throughput volumes. They were also found to have the best aesthetics to complement the YMCA lobby, with their rounded stainless steel pedestals appearing open and welcoming to members and staff alike, whilst still retaining the required level of security.

Alex Versluis, P.Eng., P.E., CEM, Senior Vice President, Property Management & Development for the YMCA of Greater Toronto, comments: “Years ago, we used to have our children’s play spaces located outside of the access control areas, making it more convenient for grandparents or other caregivers to pick them up. In today’s world, that freedom of access is no longer possible.”

Smarter Security is set to distribute further Fastlane Glassgate units over the next 18 months for up to 15 YMCA sites throughout the Greater Toronto area.

Speaking about the Fastlane turnstiles which were previously installed at the YMCA’s Cooper Koo location, Alex continues: “We haven’t had any issues in nearly two years of continuous operation. We clearly made the right selection.”
